The Fair Work Commission is committed to creating a working environment that values and utilises the contribution of its employees from diverse backgrounds and experiences, and provide more effective client service delivery, both internally and externally.
This Workplace Diversity Strategy (the Strategy) recognises that all people bring different qualities, skills, knowledge, experiences, perspectives and attitudes to work. The Commission recognises that valuing and making the most of these differences can improve the workplace for individuals and enhance the Commission’s overall performance.
This Strategy provides the framework for delivering diversity activities in the agency and will focus on attracting, recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce as well as cultivating a supportive workplace environment that encourages and engages in diversity.
The Strategy identifies 3 outcomes:
This Strategy will complement the outcomes sought under the Commission’s Agency Multicultural Plan. The Strategy mostly focuses on recruitment and retention of a range of employees. The Agency Multicultural Plan focuses on ensuring the services that the Commission provides are accessible to clients from a range of diverse backgrounds.
The Commission has designed the following strategies to deliver the outcomes.
The Strategy aims to build a relationship between the Commission and its employees by supporting an inclusive environment which looks beyond perceived differences.
To ensure that diversity principles are embedded in the Commission’s culture, all employees, the Executive and managers, will be encouraged to consider and incorporate workplace diversity principles into work practices at all times. This is an important step for ensuring a workplace free from discrimination and harassment that recognises and integrates the complementary differences of our employees in line with the APS Value of Respectful. The APS respects all people, including their rights and heritage.
Below are the diversity responsibilities of staff, managers and Executive which when adhered to, increase awareness of diversity issues and engagement.
|As an individual||As a manager||As a member of the Executive|
The Strategy will be introduced through the measures outlined in the workplace diversity implementation plan.
The Workforce Team will report the progress of the implementation plan to the Executive on an annual basis.
