4. DEFINITIONS

4.1 The Act means the Workplace Relations Act 1996, as amended from time to time.

4.2 Afternoon shift means a shift which finishes between 6.00 p.m. and midnight.

4.3 Aircraft includes the fuselage, empennage, wings, fitted engines and aircraft components.

4.4 Aircraft components includes those parts of an aircraft removed for service, repair, overhaul, test, inspection and/or maintenance, modification, or otherwise reconditioned.

4.5 Avionics means aircraft, aircraft components or aircraft ground support equipment related electrical, instruments or radio fields.

4.6 Avionic associated skills means extra specific trade skills, other than electrical, instrument or radio skills, used in aircraft avionic systems of aircraft avionic components or avionic ground support equipment which have been historically certified by electrical, instrument or radio personnel.

4.7 Avionic skill flexibilities means additional skills acquired by avionic tradespeople within the Mechanical fields either through formal training or equivalent work experience, as determined by agreed competency testing.

4.8 Avionic skill flexibilities - level 1

These skills are as follows:

4.8.1 Remove and refit panels to perform an avionic task including opening and closing of engine cowl but excluding:

4.8.2 Carry out minor mechanical repairs to avionic system components/installations including, but not limited to minor fibreglass repairs and the replacement of earth studs, anchor nuts and wiring loom supports.

4.8.3 Remove and install electrical ducts, conduits, junction boxes and clamps associated with the attachment and protection of looms.

4.8.4 Remove non-hazardous ducts associated with above.

4.8.5 Carry out minor mechanical equipment servicing routines (specific to ground support equipment personnel only).

4.8.6 Removal of P/4 and P/6 panel structure for access to Avionic installations with mechanical assistance as required.

4.9 Avionic skill flexibilities - level 2

These skills are as follows:

4.9.1 Carry out all aspects of test bench operation by local agreement. Typical test benches are:

4.9.2 Remove and install minor mechanical components so an avionic responsibility defect can be completed including generators and integrated drive generators.

4.9.3 Carry out total workshop reconditioning of any component containing an avionic unit by local agreement.

4.9.4 Perform operator maintenance inspections and minor repair of section equipment, not requiring specialist testing or facilities.

4.9.5 Participate jointly in equipment breakdown rectification, (specific to ground support equipment personnel only).

4.9.6 Assist with removal of:

4.9.7 To facilitate completion of Avionic tasks.

4.10 The Commission means the Australian Industrial Relations Commission.

4.11 The company means Qantas Airways Limited and Qantas Flight Catering Ltd, as the context requires.

4.12 Continuous shiftwork means work carried on with consecutive shifts of employees throughout the 24 hours of each of at least six consecutive days without interruption except during breakdowns or meal breaks or due to unavoidable causes beyond the control of the employer.

4.13 Day shift means a shift which commences at or after 7.00 a.m. and finishes at or before 6.00 p.m.

4.14 Early morning shift A means a shift which commences between midnight and 4.00 a.m.

4.15 Early morning shift B means a shift which commences after 4.00 a.m. and before 7.00 a.m.

4.16 Junior apprentice means a person who is under 21 years of age at the time of entering into an indenture to one of the trades specified in 15.3.3.

4.17 Mechanical skill flexibilities means additional skills acquired by Mechanical tradespersons within the avionic fields, through formal training or equivalent work experience, as determined by agreed competency testing.

4.18 Mechanical skill flexibilities - level 1

These skills are as follows:

4.18.1 Disconnection and reconnection of electrical connector plugs when accomplishing a mechanical task, to facilitate and determine integrity of a mechanical system or installation, except where a specific avionic inspection is required prior to any functional test requirement or reconnection; Electrical connections and disconnections do not include terminal type connections, but do include bonding type connections.

4.18.2 When carrying out a mechanical task and to facilitate access to the area to be worked, the aircraft maintenance engineer can disconnect/ reconnect electrical connector plugs, unless a specific avionic inspection is required prior to any functional test requirement or reconnection and remove/refit wiring loom mounts (with appropriate training);

4.18.3 Carry out minor avionic equipment servicing routines (specific to ground support equipment personnel only);

4.18.4 Removal of upper deck galley to facilitate mechanical tasks with avionic assistance as required.

4.19 Mechanical skill flexibilities - level 2

These skills are as follows:

4.19.1 Carry out all aspects of test bench operation by local agreement. Typical test benches include:

4.19.2 Removal and installation of minor avionic components or equipment for access when accomplishing a mechanical task, including opening of instrument panels, but excluding removal and installation of instrument panels and rack mounted equipment.

4.19.3 Perform operator maintenance inspections and minor repair of section equipment, not requiring specialist testing or facilities.

4.19.4 Carry out continuity, insulation, bonding and basic function checks on components not fitted to aircraft. If above checks fail to meet tolerances in accordance with the appropriate manuals, rectification must then be carried out by avionic personnel. Bonding checks of nut plates and static probe bases fitted to aircraft is also to be carried out.

4.19.5 Assist with removal and installation of fixed oxygen plumbing and equipment.

4.19.6 Carry out total workshop reconditioning of any component containing a mechanical unit by local agreement.

4.19.7 Participate jointly in equipment breakdown rectification. (specific to ground support equipment personnel only).

4.20 Minor means, for the purpose of the definitions of avionic and mechanical skill flexibilities, work that one person could reasonably undertake unassisted, without using specialist equipment.

4.21 Night shift means a shift which finishes between midnight and at or before 8.00 am.

4.22 Public holiday means any day set out in clause 31 – Public holidays.

4.23 Redundancy means a declaration by the Company that an employee or employees are surplus to labour requirements because the quantity of the work has diminished.

4.24 Retrenchment means the termination of employment of an employee by the Company for reasons of redundancy.

4.25 Rostered shift means a shift of which the employee concerned has had at least 48 hours' notice.

4.26 Seven day shift worker means shift workers who are rostered to work regularly on Sundays and public holidays.
