PART 3 - STATION HANDS 

34. CONTRACT OF EMPLOYMENT

34.1 Station hands shall be engaged either as full-time employees or regular part-time employees or casual employees.

34.1.1 At the time of engagement an employer will inform the station hand of the terms of the engagement and in particular whether the employee is to be full-time, regular part-time or casual.

34.1.2 Full-time employment

Full-time employment is employment on a regular and continuous basis for 152 hours in each consecutive period of four weeks.

34.1.3 Regular part-time employment

34.1.3(a) Part-time employment is employment on a regular and continuous basis for less hours of work as prescribed for a full time employee.

34.1.3(b) Part-time employees will be rostered to work a regular pattern of hours. The roster will be established with the agreement of the employee. Any agreed variation to the regular pattern of work will be recorded in writing.

34.1.3(c) A part-time employee will be paid at an hourly rate calculated on the basis of 1/38 of the weekly award wage for the appropriate classification.

34.1.3(d) A part-time employee receives, on a pro rata basis, equivalent pay and conditions to those of full-time employees who do the same kind of work.

34.1.4 Casual employment

34.1.4(a) A casual employee is to be employed by the hour.

34.1.4(b) A casual employee shall be paid per hour at the rate of 1/38th of the weekly rate for the station hand Grade 1 category, plus a loading of 25 per cent. The loading paid to casual employees is in lieu of Annual Leave, Leave Loading, Public Holidays, Sick Leave, Long Service Leave, Short Time, Notice of Termination & Redundancy and lack of continuity of employment.

34.2 Station hands shall be engaged either as:

Station hand grade 1 – a person with less than 12 months experience in the industry

Station hand grade 2 – a person with at least 12 months experience in the industry as a station hand but who does not conform to the definition of senior station hand.

Senior station hand grade 3 – a person who has had at least 2 years experience in the industry as a general station hand and who is capable of performing efficiently without supervision any of the tasks reasonably required of him including driving, maintaining and operating farm vehicles and machinery; animal husbandry; stock handling; irrigation work and use of chemicals.

At the time of engagement an employer must inform the station hand of the grade to which he or she has been assigned.
