Unless a contrary intention appears, expressions used in this award will have the following meanings:
7.1 Articulated vehicle means a vehicle with three or more axles comprising a combination of a power unit (called tractor-truck or prime mover) and one or more semi-trailers which are drawn by the power unit and connected to the power unit by either a turntable, dolly or drawbar which is automatically detachable or permanently coupled.
Converter Dolly means a pig trailer consisting of a turntable, a drawbar and an axle group, designed and used to convert a semi-trailer to a dog trailer.
Driver means any employee, other than an Airport Operator, engaged to drive or control any type of vehicle specified in this award irrespective of other duties. This definition does not exclude other duties ordinarily performed by a driver such as loading and unloading of bulk vehicles.
Gross Vehicle Mass/Gross Combination mass (GVM/GCM) means, in the case of an articulated truck or heavy trailer combination, the maximum permissible mass (whether described as the gross train mass or otherwise) for the motor vehicle and trailer(s) or semi-trailer(s) attached to it, together with the load carried on each, as stated in:
(i) any certificate of registration or other certificate issued in respect of the motor vehicle by the relevant authority or the corresponding authority of another State or Territory; or
(ii) that is required by law to be painted or displayed on the motor vehicle
In any other case, GVM/GCM means the maximum permissible mass (whether described as the gross vehicle mass or otherwise) for the motor vehicle and its load (but excluding any trailer and its load) as stated in:
(iii) a certificate of registration or other certificate issued in respect of the motor vehicle by the relevant authority or corresponding authority of another State or Territory; or
(iv) that is required by law to be painted or displayed on the motor vehicle.
Rigid vehicle means a single unit vehicle (in which the engine, driving compartment and load carrying compartment, tank or tray are all mounted on one chassis).
Road-train means a vehicle combination longer than 19 metres in length and comprising:
(a) a rigid motor vehicle hauling one or more trailers; or
(b) an articulated vehicle hauling one or more trailers.
7.2 Afternoon shift means any shift finishing after 6.00 p.m. and at or before midnight.
7.3 Continuous shift work means work carried on with consecutive shifts of employees throughout the 24 hours each day without interruption except during break-downs or due to unavoidable causes beyond the control of the employer.
7.4 Day shift means work commencing at or before 7.00 a.m. and alternating with any other shift.
7.5 Day worker means an employee whose daily hours of work fall within the spread of ordinary hours as prescribed by a relevant award.
7.6 Double time means double the employee’s ordinary-time rate.
7.7 Night shift means any shift finishing subsequent to midnight and at or before 8.00 a.m.
7.8 Non-continuous shift work means shift work other than continuous shift work as defined.
7.9 Ordinary-time rate means for an employee, other than a casual employee, the base wage rate prescribed in certified agreements read in conjunction with this award or, in the absence of a certified agreement, in accordance with the wage rates in this award.
7.10 Permanently working means an employee on shift work working on an afternoon shift or on a night shift or on a combination of afternoon and night shifts if:
7.10.1 the employee works on an afternoon or night shift and not alternating with another shift or with day work so as to give one-third of the employee’s working time off that afternoon or night shift or combination thereof in each shift work cycle; or
7.10.2 the employee remains on afternoon or night shift only, or combination thereof, for a longer period than four consecutive weeks; or
7.10.3 the employee is specifically engaged to work only on an afternoon or night shift or combination.
7.11 Seven-day shift worker means a shift worker who is regularly rostered, in accordance with a shift roster to work as part of the ordinary hours of shift work on Sundays and holidays.
7.12 Shift means a period of duty falling within the definition of shift work.
7.13 Shift work means work performed in daily recurrent periods wholly, or partly, between the hours of 7.30 p.m. and 7.00 a.m.
7.14 Shift worker means an employee engaged on shift work as defined.
7.15 Time and a half means one and a half times the employee’s ordinary-time rate.
