24. SPECIAL RATES

24.1 Acid work

An employee required to work on the construction or repairs to acid furnaces, acid stills, acid towers and all other acid resisting brickwork shall be paid an additional $1.43 per hour or part thereof for all purposes of the award.

24.2 Carrying fuels, oils and greases

An employee required by the employer to carry any fuels, oils and/or bulk greases in the employee's own vehicle for use in the employer's plant shall be paid $9.09 per day in addition to any amount payable elsewhere in this award for each day the employee is so required by the employer to carry such materials.

24.3 Confined spaces

An employee required to work in a place the dimensions or nature of which necessitate working in a cramped position or without sufficient ventilation shall be paid an additional $0.67 per hour or part thereof.

24.4 Cutting stone

An employee engaged at cutting stone, blocks or bricks by power saw shall be paid an additional $0.67 per hour or part thereof.

24.5 Dirty work

An employee engaged on unusually dirty work shall be paid an additional $0.54 per hour or part thereof.

24.6 Dual lift allowance

Where two or more fork-lifts or cranes are engaged on any lift the drivers thereof shall be paid an additional amount at the rate of $2.79 for each day or part thereof so occupied.

24.7 Explosive powered tools

An employee using explosive powered tools shall be paid an additional $1.27 for each day or shift on which he/she uses such tools.

24.8 Fumes

An employee required to work in a place where fumes of sulphur or other acid or other offensive fumes are present shall be paid such rates as are agreed upon between the union and the employer.

24.9 Furnace work

An employee engaged in the construction or alteration or repairs of boilers, flues, furnaces, retorts, kilns, ovens, ladles and similar refractory work shall be paid an additional $1.43 cents per hour or part thereof for all purposes of the award.

24.10 Heavy blocks

Employees engaged in handling blocks shall be paid the following additional rates:

An employee shall not be required to lift a block in excess of 20 kg in weight unless such employee is provided with a mechanical aid or with an assisting employee; provided that an employee shall not be required to manually lift any block in excess of 20 kg in weight to a height of more than 4 feet (1.2 m) above the working platform.

24.11 Height allowance

24.11.1 An employee working on a bridge, chimney stack, spire, radio or television mast or tower, shaft, tower or similar structure, where the construction exceeds fifteen metres in height shall be paid for all work above fifteen metres $0.54 per hour, with $0.54 per hour additional for all work above each fifteen metres.

24.11.2 Provided that height allowance shall not be payable to an employee working on a bridge deck after permanent installation of the bridge parapets has been completed.

24.11.3 An employee working on a building-type structure (e.g. a water or sewerage treatment plant, pumping station, power house, smelter potroom, ore treatment plant, mineral processing plant, cement mill, or pulp mill) where the construction exceeds fifteen metres in height shall be paid the allowance prescribed in 24.11.1 hereof.

24.12 Hot work

24.12.1 An employee who works in a place where the temperature has been raised by artificial means to between 46 degrees and 54 degrees Celsius shall be paid an additional $0.54 per hour or part thereof. Where the temperature exceeds 54 degrees Celsius an employee shall be paid an additional $0.67 per hour or part thereof.

24.12.2 Where such work continues for more than two hours the employee shall be entitled to twenty minutes rest after every two hours work without loss of pay.

24.13 Hot bitumen work

An employee handling hot bitumen or asphalt shall be paid $0.67 per hour extra.

24.14 Insulation

An employee handling recognised insulating material or working in the immediate vicinity so as to be affected by the use thereof shall be paid an additional $0.67 per hour or part thereof.

24.15 Laser safety officer allowance

Where an employee has been appointed by his/her employer to carry out the duties of a laser safety officer he/she shall be paid an allowance of $2.36 per day or part thereof whilst carrying out such duties. It shall be paid as a flat amount without attracting any premium or penalty.

24.16 Pile driving

Where a mobile crane of in excess of fifteen tonnes is required to perform pile driving on any site or installation, or is required to be involved in the extraction process, the operator shall receive an additional disability allowance of $12.49 per day or part thereof.

24.17 Pipe enamelling

An employee engaged on the enamelling of pipe joints by hand, on site, shall be paid an additional $5.27 per day or part thereof.

24.18 Powdered lime dust

24.18.1 Employees exposed for any period greater than one hour in any shift to powdered lime dust from the spreading or mixing of powdered lime used in the stabilisation of roadmaking material shall be reimbursed the cost of purchasing the following protective clothing:

The provisions of this subclause do not apply where the protective clothing is supplied by the employer.

24.18.2 In addition, the employer shall maintain at or near the work site or other place where such lime is being used, adequate facilities to enable any employee whose skin is contaminated with lime either directly or through his/her ordinary clothing to wash the affected area. A supply of barrier cream and hand cleanser shall be provided for the use of any employee required to handle powdered lime.

24.18.3 Employees engaged in carrying out lime work shall be obliged to wear the protective clothing supplied by the employer pursuant to 24.18.1 hereof.

24.18.4 Each employee exposed to powdered lime dust whilst engaged in spreading or mixing powdered lime shall, during the time he/she is so exposed, be paid $0.54 per hour in addition to all other rates payable in this award.

24.19 Sand blasting

An employee required to use a sand blasting machine shall be paid an allowance of $0.67 per hour or part of an hour whilst so engaged.

24.20 Sewerage work

24.20.1 Compressed air work

Employees engaged in construction work in compressed air shall be paid at a rate determined by agreement between the employer and the majority of employees.

24.20.2 Live sewer work (as defined)

An employee who works in a situation where there is direct aerial connection with a sewer through which sewerage is flowing, shall be paid an additional $0.49 per hour or part thereof.

24.20.3 Timbering

Any sinker required to timber any shaft, drive or trench shall be paid an additional $0.61 per hour or part thereof.

24.20.4 Special work

A driver operating a tractor fitted with a blade and using such blade in breaking trail in heavy sidling country shall be paid an additional allowance of $0.07 per hour for each day or part of a day when so occupied.

24.21 Swing scaffold

24.21.1 An employee required to work from any type of swing scaffold or any scaffold suspended by rope or cable, bosuns chair, or a suspended scaffold requiring the use of steel or iron hooks or angle irons shall be paid the appropriate allowance set out below corresponding to the storey level at which the anchor or bracing, from which the stage is suspended, has been erected. Such allowance shall be paid for a minimum of four hours work or part thereof:

24.21.2 Payment contained in this subclause is in recognition of disabilities associated with the wearing of safety harness.

24.22 Toxic substances

24.22.1 Employees using toxic substances or materials of a like nature shall be paid $0.67 per hour or part thereof extra. Employees working in close proximity to employees so engaged shall be paid $0.54 per hour or part thereof extra.

24.22.2 For the purpose of this subclause toxic substances shall include epoxy based materials and all materials which include or require the addition of a catalyst hardener and reactive additives or two pack catalyst system shall be deemed to be materials of a like nature.

24.23 Wet work

Employees working in any place where water is continually dripping on the employee so that clothing and boots become wet, or where there is water underfoot, shall be paid $0.54 per hour whilst so engaged.

24.24 Compressed air work

The following special rates shall be paid to employees of Transfield Construction Pty. Ltd. engaged in construction work in compressed air.
