4. DEFINITIONS

4.1 The Act means the Workplace Relations Act 1996 (Cth), as varied from time to time

4.2 Allocated means awarded or assigned.

4.3 Appropriate accommodation is accommodation of a criteria agreed between the Company and the Association from time to time.

4.4 Approved paid leave means annual leave, long service leave and personal carer's leave.

4.5 Assigned means an obligation of a flight attendant to perform a duty as directed by the Company.

4.6 Assignable time available means a flight attendant whose projected duty hour credits for the bid period are less than minimum guaranteed hours.

4.7 The Association means the Flight Attendants' Association of Australia

4.8 Available day means a day when the flight attendant is available for duty. It does not include a day of duty, a day wholly within minimum base turnaround time, a designated duty free day or a day of approved leave.

4.9 Awarded means an obligation on a flight attendant to perform a duty resulting from the acceptance of an offer.

4.10 Base means any place designated by the Company to which flight attendants are allocated for the purpose of reporting for Ground Duty, commencing Standby Duty or reporting for the commencement of a pattern.

4.11 Bid line means an arrangement of duties and/or available days and/or designated duty free days and/or days of approved leave which are allocated to a flight attendant for a bid period.

4.12 Bid line holder means a flight attendant allocated a bid line.

4.13 Bid period means a 56 day period designated by the Company.

4.14 Bid sheet means a form or procedure approved by the Company for the purpose of expressing preferences for duties and the arrangement of duties in a bid line.

4.15 Bid system means a system which enables flight attendants to express a preference to be allocated to particular patterns and the principles by which preferences are allocated.

4.16 Category means a flight attendant's classification.

4.17 The Commission means the Australian Industrial Relations Commission.

4.18 The Company means Qantas Airways Limited.

4.19 Deadheading means travelling as directed by the Company on an aircraft or surface transport otherwise than as an operating flight attendant for the purpose of positioning for operating flight duty, between operating flight duties and to base at the completion of operating flight duties.

4.20 Designated duty free day means a calendar day commencing at midnight local time at the flight attendant's base free of duty.

4.21 Downline disruption means when a flight attendant's pattern is changed after the flight attendant has reported for the pattern.

4.22 Duty includes flight duty, ground duty, standby duty but does not include any obligation by the flight attendant to contact the Company or any contact by the Company of the flight attendant.

4.23 Duty free period means a period of time at the flight attendant's base during which he/she is not performing functions assigned by the Company and/or under the control of the Company.

4.24 Duty hour credit means the credit projected or accrued to a flight attendant for duty planned or performed by that flight attendant for the purpose of pay and/or bid period limitations.

4.25 Fixed means pay protected hours which a flight attendant has no obligation to offset.

4.26 Flight attendant means any employee of the Company responsible for performing services in accordance with Company regulations and standards in whatever category or position the Company may determine from time to time and subject to the provisions of this award.

4.27 Flight Attendant Level 1 means a flight attendant who has completed initial training, is required to work in the economy class cabin and who must undertake the necessary and relevant training to progress to level 2.

4.28 Flight Attendant Level 2 means a flight attendant who has been a flight attendant level 1, who has satisfactorily completed training for level 2 and has been appointed to level 2 by the Company, is required to operate in all cabins and in the galleys and may undertake necessary and relevant training for level 3.

4.29 Flight Attendant Level 3 means a flight attendant who has been a flight attendant level 2 and has been appointed to the position of level 3 after having satisfactorily completed training for level 3 who works in and supervises, the economy class, business class and first class cabin, manages saleable amenities, may be required to carry out flight attendant level 4 functions in the absence of the flight attendant level 4 and may undertake the necessary and relevant training for level 4 promotion.

4.30 Flight Attendant Level 4 means a flight attendant who has been a flight attendant level 3, who has been appointed to the position of level 4 after having satisfactorily completed the necessary and relevant training for level 4, who has the overall responsibility for customer service onboard aircraft, acts as line management representative for crew whilst away from base and who may seek appointment to level 5.

4.31 Flight Attendant Level 5 means a flight attendant who has been appointed to the position of line manager from the ranks of flight attendants level 4, with responsibility for the maintenance of product and cabin standards, acting as a communications link between cabin crew and the Cabin Services Branch and monitoring customer service trends.

4.32 Flight duty means deadheading or operating duty.

4.33 Flying line means a bid line which contains planned sequences of patterns and designated duty free days and may include available days and/or days of approved leave and/or known ground duties.

4.34 Flying line holder means a flight attendant allocated to a flying line.

4.35 Ground duty means duty which relates to the employment of a flight attendant and may include, but is not restricted to, training, lectures, training of others, seminars, luncheons and publicity work for the Company, but excludes standby duty.

4.36 Known flying means all flying for which the date and time of departure and return are known and from which a pattern(s) can be constructed.

4.37 Local night means a period of 12 consecutive hours, eight hours of which fall between 2200 and 0800 local time.

4.38 Majority decision means the decision of a majority of flight attendants required to exercise a discretion pursuant to this award. If a tied vote occurs the designated Customer Service Manager (Level 4 Flight Attendant), or if no Customer Service Manager is affected the most senior flight attendant in the highest category, must exercise a casting vote.

4.39 Minimum guaranteed hours means 149 duty hour credits for each 56 day bid period.

4.40 Open time means all patterns which have not been included in a flying line or which subsequently become available for allocation.

4.41 Operating means performing duties associated with the safety and comfort of passengers in their carriage by aircraft.

4.42 Operating flight duty element means that portion of a period of flight duty when a flight attendant is operating.

4.43 Pattern means a flight duty period, or sequence of flight duty periods with intervening rest periods, commencing and completing at the flight attendant's base.

4.44 Pattern days means the number of days away from base on a pattern inclusive of the day of departure from base and the day of return to base.

4.45 Planned means duty as known to the Company prior to the Company required reporting time at a flight attendant's base for that duty.

4.46 Projected duty hour credits means the number of duty hour credits a flight attendant is projected to accrue during his or her bid period.

4.47 Prolonged sick leave means a period of approved sick leave that is to exceed or has already exceeded twenty one consecutive calendar days.

4.48 Reserve line means a bid line which contains planned sequences of available days and designated duty free days and may include days of approved leave and/or ground duties.

4.49 Reserve line holder means a flight attendant allocated to a reserve line.

4.50 Scheduled means duty changed, as a result of unplanned circumstances, at or after the Company required reporting time at a flight attendant's base for that duty. If a flight attendant was not advised by the Company of the changed duty prior to his or her arrival at the Company reporting location, the original Company required reporting time must be considered the Company required reporting time for that flight attendant for that duty.

4.51 Skills acquisition means successful completion of the appropriate training module.

4.52 Slip means rest periods planned or scheduled between flight duty periods within a pattern

4.53 Specialist skills means skills exercised by a flight attendant whilst carrying out ground duties in an advisory or training capacity on a temporary basis, as required by the Company, in areas including the Training, Safety, Service Development or Communication Groups.
