16. WAGES
16.1 Wages
The minimum guaranteed hours for a 56 day bid period is 149 duty hour credits. Minimum guaranteed hours for a portion of a bid period shall be calculated by dividing the flight attendant's minimum guaranteed hours for the bid period by 56 and multiplying by the number of relevant days.
16.1.1 Except as otherwise provided by this award, a flight attendant will be paid the following rates per duty hour credit:
16.1.1(a) A flight attendant employed prior to the operative date of this award will be paid the following minimum rate per duty hour credit and the residual amount for the relevant year of service, where applicable.
16.1.1(b) A flight attendant employed after the operative date of this award will be paid the following minimum rate per duty hour credit for the respective Level.
16.1.2 Where a flight attendant is paid a weekly rate calculated in accordance with this clause the following rates will be paid:
16.1.2(a) A flight attendant employed prior to the operative date of this award will be paid the following minimum rate per week and the residual amount for the relevant year of service, where applicable.
16.1.2(b) A flight attendant employed after the operative date of this award will be paid the following minimum rate per week for the respective Level.

16.1.3 Residual amounts specified will be absorbed against future safety net adjustments.

16.1.4 Subject to 16.1.1 and 16.1.2, if a weekly salary equivalent is required for a flight attendant who is paid a rate per duty hour credit, the weekly salary will be the hourly rate of pay multiplied by 1188.21 divided by 52.
16.1.5 Subject to 16.1.1 and 16.1.2, if an annual salary equivalent is required for a flight attendant who is paid a rate per duty hour credit, the annual salary will be the hourly rate of pay multiplied by 1188.21.
16.1.6 If an annual salary equivalent is required for a flight attendant who is paid a weekly rate of pay, the annual salary will be the weekly rate of pay multiplied by 52.
16.1.7 The Company may withhold payment under the circumstances outlined in 22.9.1
16.1.8 Safety net wage increases

The rates of pay in this award include the arbitrated safety net adjustment payable under the Safety Net Review—Wages June 2005 decision [PR002005]. This arbitrated safety net adjustment may be offset against any equivalent amount in rates of pay received by employees whose wages and conditions of employment are regulated by this award which are above the wage rates prescribed in the award. Such above-award payments include wages payable pursuant to certified agreements, currently operating enterprise flexibility agreements, Australian workplace agreements, award variations to give effect to enterprise agreements and overaward arrangements. Absorption which is contrary to the terms of an agreement is not required.
Increases made under previous National Wage Case principles or under the current Statement of Principles, excepting those resulting from enterprise agreements, are not to be used to offset arbitrated safety net adjustments.
16.2 Flight duty in excess of twelve hours
16.2.1 When a flight attendant's actual flight duty period exceeds twelve hours, he or she must receive an additional payment of one hour for each hour that his or her actual duty period exceeds twelve hours, prorated for time less than one hour at his or her applicable rate of pay per duty hour credit.
16.2.2 Except as provided in clause 16.2.3, in addition to the payment in clause 16.2.1, when a flight attendant's actual flight duty period exceeds fourteen hours he or she must receive an additional payment of 30 minutes for each hour that his or her actual flight duty period exceeds fourteen hours, prorated for time less than one hour, at his or her applicable rate of pay per duty hour credit.

16.2.3 In addition to the payment in clause 16.2.1 if a flight attendant's flight duty period is planned as a single sector operating flight duty period in excess of fourteen hours, he or she must receive the following payments for each actual hour of duty in excess of fourteen hours prorated for time less than one hour:

16.3 Payment for higher duties
16.3.1 When a flight attendant is required to operate in a higher category he or she must be paid pro rata at the difference between:
16.3.1(a) his or her normal rate of pay per duty hour credit; and
16.3.1(b) the first year rate of pay per duty hour credit he or she would receive if he or she was promoted to the higher category.
16.3.2 The payment will only be made if the flight attendant is required to operate in a higher category for a minimum of one flight duty period.
16.4 Classifications
16.4.1 Upon appointment as a flight attendant
Upon appointment, a flight attendant will have the category of "Flight Attendant (Under Initial Training)" and must be paid at the rate prescribed in Clause 16.1 of this Award.
16.4.2 Upon graduation as a flight attendant
Upon graduation as a flight attendant, a flight attendant will have the category of "Flight attendant" and must be paid at the rate prescribed in Clause 16.1 of this Award with effect from the date on which he or she was first available to operate within that category.
16.4.3 Category change
A flight attendant who graduates for appointment to a higher category will be paid at the rate prescribed in 16.1 of this award applicable to the higher category with effect from the date he or she is first available to operate in such higher category.
16.5 Payment of wages
16.5.1 Unless other wise agreed between the company and a majority of flight attendants, wages must be paid fortnightly, either:
16.5.1(a) for bid line holders at the rate of 45.575 duty hour credits for the preceding fourteen days; or
16.5.1(b) other average or actual rate as agreed for part-time flight attendants between the parties.
16.5.2 Pay adjustments must be made as follows:
16.5.2(a) additional pay for duty hour credits in excess of 186 (flying line) or 149 (reserve line) in the previous bid period must be paid on the 29th day of the next bid period;
16.5.2(b) the Company will make a downward pay adjustment on the 29th day of the next bid period if a flight attendant has rejected pay protection or was removed from duty at his or her request or has been held out of service or for reasons set out in 22.9.
16.5.2(c) additional pay for higher duties, flight duty in excess of 12 hours, ground duty in excess of 8 hours, reduced rest periods must be paid within two pay periods after the claims are received.
