16.1 Wage rates - South Australia

16.1.1 Classification definitions

16.1.1(a) Grade 1 Labourer, general Relativity 85%

16.1.1(a)(i) Duties

• Loading, unloading, laying out and testing of pipes;
• Sanding of pipes in trenches;
• Assisting welder in setting up, grinding and cleaning of welds, and in applying shrink sleeves and testing of coating for defects;
• Pot-holing to locate other services; use of boring equipment, jackhammer, etc.;
• Maintenance of site and storage facilities when required;
• Maintenance of equipment and work vehicle.

16.1.1(a)(ii) Training

For promotion to the level of Grade 2 Plastic fusion welder, the General labourer must meet the following criteria:

• Demonstration of a responsible attitude to work performance, and requiring little supervision in the performance of required tasks;
• Willingness to undertake training, as required;
• Possession of a Class II driving licence;
• Testing with the SA Gas Company’s training section (three-day course). Assessment to take place between six-twelve months, or upon mutual agreement;
• Understanding of OH&S practices.

16.1.1(b) Grade 2 Plastic fusion welder Relativity 89%

16.1.1(b)(i) Duties

• To perform all the duties of a Grade 1 employee, with less supervision than is required for a Grade 1 Labourer, general;
• To perform plastic fusion welding to the required specifications.

16.1.1(b)(ii) Training

• As for Grade 1 employee.

16.1.1(c) Grade 3 Motor vehicle driver Relativity 93%

16.1.1(c)(i) Duties

• Operation of all machinery required in gas mains laying, except a backhoe;
• Liaison with the Supervisor and/or Foreman/leading hand(s);
• Ensure that all locations, as required, have been obtained;
• Ensure that all vehicles required are maintained.

16.1.1(c)(ii) Training

• As for Grade 1 employee.

16.1.1(d) Grade 4 Operator Relativity 98%

16.1.1(d)(i) Duties

• Operator of a backhoe machine;
• Liaison with the Supervisor and/or Foreman/leading hand(s);
• Ensure that all locations, as required, have been obtained;
• Ensure that backhoe machine is maintained as required, including minor repairs.

16.1.1(d)(ii) Training

• Demonstration of a responsible attitude to work performance, and requiring little supervision in the performance of required tasks;
• Willingness to undertake further training, as required.

16.1.1(e) Grade 5 Mechanic Relativity 100%

16.1.1(e)(i) Duties

• Ability to perform all skills of lesser grades;
• Supervision of Workshop Area and Apprentice(s), Diesel mechanic(s);
• Responsible for obtaining all materials required for maintenance work;
• Responsibility for overall maintenance of equipment, vehicles and workshop area.

16.1.1(e)(ii) Training

• As for Grade 4 employee, but including training in supervision.

16.1.1(f) Grade 6 Welder Relativity 105%

16.1.1(f)(i) Duties

• To perform all welding tasks in accordance with the code (in workshop only);
• Maintenance of all welding equipment;
• Understanding of Code of Practice (OH&S) on welding.

16.1.1(f)(ii) Training

• As for Grade 4 employee.

16.1.1(g) Grade 7 Field welder Relativity 119%

16.1.1(g)(i) Duties

• To perform all welding tasks in accordance with the Code (In the Field);
• Liaison with supervisor(s) and/or Foreman/leading hand(s) on a daily basis;
• Ensure that all locations, if required, have been obtained;
• Ensure all welding equipment is well maintained;
• Understanding of Code of Practice (OH&S) on welding.

16.1.1(g)(ii) Training

• As for Grade 4 employee.

16.1.1(h) Grade 8 X-ray welder Relativity 112%

16.1.1(h)(i) Duties

• As for Field worker; but also
• Perform higher quality welding to X-ray quality;
• Understanding of Code of Practice (OH&S) on welding.

16.1.1(h)(ii) Training

• As for Grade 4 employee.

16.1.1(i) Grade 9 Foreman Relativity 115%

16.1.1(i)(i) Duties

• In charge of plastic or welding crews, but to work under guidance of the supervisor;
• Obtain work from supervisor on daily basis;
• Checking that all locations, as required, have been obtained from the supervisors, including pot-holing to visually sight the amenity;
• Ensuring that all materials required for jobs are on-site, and ordering for same;
• Ensuring all equipment and vehicles are kept in good condition;
• Ensuring that required paperwork is correct, and is passed onto office;
• To perform all skills of lesser grades.

16.1.1(i)(ii) Training

• As for employees of lesser grades, but particularly in supervision.

16.1.1(j) Grade 10 Gas fitter Relativity 116%

16.1.1(j)(i) Duties

• Gas fitting without supervision;
• Personal contact with public;
• Understanding of all OH&S practices related to working with live gas.

16.1.1(j)(ii) Training

• Gas Registration Course;
• All training required to be able to work with live gas.

16.1.1(k) Grade 11 Supervisor Relativity 120%

16.1.1(k)(i) Duties

• General responsibility for organisation and supervision, tools, equipment and work techniques;
• Monitor performance and possible operating improvement in the following areas:
• Field progress;
• Client relationships;
• Labour utilisation and control;
• Action and development plans;
• Personal effectiveness, goals, action and development plans.
• Liaison with management;
• Understanding of OH&S practices;
• Understanding of the Road Traffic Act;
• Knowledge of industrial matters;
• Ensuring that company procedures and practices are followed in occupational health and safety;
• Ability to perform all functions of lower grades;

16.1.1(k)(ii) Training

• Training in Supervisory and Management skills;
• Training in Occupational Health and Safety.
