Date of registration: 10 November 1916, originally as The Federated Miscellaneous Workers Union of Australia
The organisation is composed of 9 branches. Each branch is a reporting unit for the purposes of financial reporting, other than the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales LH, and Tasmanian branches, which each hold exemptions under s.245 of the Fair Work (Registered Organisations) Act 2009 (the RO Act, financial reporting on an alternative basis). The governance of the organisation is vested in the National Council, composed of delegates from each branch.
The organisation is also governed by a National Executive composed of Office Bearers and members from each branch. Each branch is governed by a Branch Executive with some also having a Branch Council.
Elections for all office positions within the organisation are conducted by the Australian Electoral Commission, other than the New South Wales LH Branch, which has an exemption from having its elections conducted by the Australian Electoral Commission and is also exempt from the postal ballot provisions under the RO Act.
The term of office for all office positions is 4 years.
