  • 31 December – Australian Industrial Relations Commission – final day of operation
  • 31 July – Australian Fair Pay Commission – final day of operation
  • 1 July – Fair Work Australia, Office of the Fair Work Ombudsman and the Fair Work divisions of the Federal Court and Federal Magistrates Court - commence operations
  • 26 May - Fair Work Australia and the Office of the Fair Work Ombudsman established after key sections of the Fair Work Act 2009 are proclaimed
  • 30 June – Workplace Ombudsman – final day of operation
  • 7 April – Fair Work Bill 2009 receives Royal Assent
  • 20 March – Fair Work Bill 2009 passes both Houses of the Australian Parliament

  • 25 November – Fair Work Bill 2008 introduced in Federal Parliament
  • 28 March – Workplace Relations Amendment (Transition to Forward with Fairness) Act 2008 commences
  • 19 March – Transitional legislation passes Australian Parliament

  • 28 August – ALP releases Forward with Fairness Implementation Plan
  • 28 April – ALP release Forward with Fairness policy document committing to introduce a new national workplace relations system by 1 January 2010
