In Federated Gas Employee’s Industrial Union v Metropolitan Gas Company Justice Higgins said:

‘...7s in 1907 were worth as much.... in the commodities which wages can procure, as 8s 5 ¼ d today... The industrial unrest which is so general in all parts of the world seems to have solid foundation in the rise in prices of commodities, in the increasing difficulty of getting the things that are essential for subsistence.’[1]
