20. ALLOWANCES AND SPECIAL RATES

20.1 Soda ash

20.1.1 Employers shall provide proper facilities for the protection of employees engaged in loading and unloading soda ash from delivery vehicles by hand. In the event of such facilities not being so provided the employer shall pay each employee whilst so engaged the sum of 63 cents per hour extra. Except for employees employed in the wool sorting, wool scouring and carbonising and wool store sections at GH Michell & Sons Pty Ltd (Laverton), Warrnambool Textiles Division of Onkaparinga Woollen Co. Ltd, GH Michell & Sons (Aust) Pty Ltd (Salisbury North) (in so far as their wool scouring and carbonising operations are concerned), Onkaparinga Woollen Co. Ltd, Lobethal, Coats Patons (Australia) Ltd (Launceston), Canobolas Wool Topmaking Pty Ltd (Orange) who shall be paid the sum of $1.01 per hour extra.

20.1.2 The provisions of 20.1 do not apply to employees handling soda ash in and around the scouring and carbonising machinery during processing.

20.2 Leading hand

Leading hands where so appointed (other than those classified in Clause 17 of this award) shall be paid $28.20 per week where three or more employees are supervised.

20.3 Dead wool

Dead wool means wool gathered from the carcasses of sheep which have died otherwise than by slaughter.

20.3.1 Employees breaking up dead wool, sorting dead wool, or working on willey machine on dead wool - 97 cents per hour whilst so working.

20.3.2 Employees feeding dead wool in scour - 55 cents per hour whilst so working.

20.3.3 Employees required to wheel, feed or scour pie wool - 55 cents per hour whilst so employed.

20.4 Carbonised dust

Employees required to work in carbonised dust room, or to remove dust from carbonisers - $14.05 per week.

20.5 Clean wool scouring settling pits

Employees required to clean wool scouring settling pits which are in an unusually dirty or offensive condition shall be paid at double ordinary rates whilst so engaged.

20.6 Protective clothing footwear and gloves

Where an employee is required to wear protective clothing and equipment as stipulated by the relevant law operating in a State or Territory covered by this award, the employer must reimburse the employee for the cost of purchasing such special clothing and equipment. The provisions of this paragraph do not apply where the clothing and equipment is paid for by the employer.

20.7 First aid

Where an employee is appointed by his/her employer to act as a certified first-aid attendant in any establishment such employee shall, in addition to his/her ordinary rate of pay, be paid the sum of $2.30 a day.

20.8 Travel expenses

20.8.1 In the event of an employer requiring an employee to travel to any place other than his/her usual place of employment he/she shall pay all travelling expenses.

20.8.2 When an employee, after having worked overtime, or a shift for which he/she has not been regularly rostered, finishes work at a time when reasonable means of transport are not available, the employer shall provide him with a conveyance to his/her home, or pay his/her current wage for the time reasonably occupied in reaching his/her home.

20.9 Meal allowance

An employee shall be entitled to receive a meal allowance of $9.95 in accordance with the overtime provisions of this award.

20.10 Change of shift allowance

The following allowance shall apply to employees employed in the wool sorting, wool scouring and carbonising and wool store sections at GH Michell & Sons Pty Ltd (Laverton), Warrnambool Textiles Division of Onkaparinga Woollen Co. Ltd, GH Michell & Sons (Aust) Pty Ltd (Salisbury North) (in so far as their wool scouring and carbonising operations are concerned), Onkaparinga Woollen Co. Ltd, Lobethal, Coats Patons (Australia) Ltd (Launceston), Canobolas Wool Topmaking Pty Ltd (Orange).

20.10.1 An employee who is required to change from one shift to another without two working days’ notice of such change of shifts will be paid $15.20 extra as compensation, but this will not apply during any period where power restrictions are operating.

20.11 Instructors allowance

The following allowance shall apply to employees employed in the wool sorting, wool scouring and carbonising and wool store sections at GH Michell & Sons Pty Ltd (Laverton), Warrnambool Textiles Division of Onkaparinga Woollen Co. Ltd, GH Michell & Sons (Aust) Pty Ltd (Salisbury North) (in so far as their wool scouring and carbonising operations are concerned), Onkaparinga Woollen Co. Ltd, Lobethal, Coats Patons (Australia) Ltd (Launceston), Canobolas Wool Topmaking Pty Ltd (Orange).

Instructor means an employee trained as an instructor and appointed by management to instruct employees in the duties of their skill level classifications.

20.11.1 An instructor will be paid $13.40 per week which will be treated as part of his or her wage for all purposes of the award except incentive payments. This extra rate will not apply to employees covered by clause 22 – Payment by results.

20.12 Higher duties allowance

The following allowance shall apply to employees employed in the wool sorting, wool scouring and carbonising and wool store sections at GH Michell & Sons Pty Ltd (Laverton), Warrnambool Textiles Division of Onkaparinga Woollen Co. Ltd, GH Michell & Sons (Aust) Pty Ltd (Salisbury North) (in so far as their wool scouring and carbonising operations are concerned), Onkaparinga Woollen Co. Ltd, Lobethal, Coats Patons (Australia) Ltd (Launceston), Canobolas Wool Topmaking Pty Ltd (Orange).

20.12.1 An employee engaged for more than one half of the day or shift on duties carrying a higher rate than his or her classification will be paid the higher rate for such day or shift. If for less than one half of one day or shift, he or she will be paid the higher rate for the time so worked.
