(1) An employee engaged on duties carrying a higher rate than his ordinary classification shall be paid the higher rate for the period he was so engaged, but if he is so engaged for more than two hours of one day or shift, he shall be paid the higher rate for the whole day or shift.
(2) Any employee regularly engaged in relieving work shall be paid the highest rate applicable to the class of work upon which he is so employed during any day or shift.
