34. TRAINING AND TRAINING COURSES
34.1 General
The grading structure for engineering and maintenance classifications (unlicensed) contained in this award is based on progression through the grades by the acquisition of new skills and the ability and preparedness to work flexibly. The acquisition of these skills will be achieved either by successful completion of a Technical and Further Education (TAFE) course or by in-house company training. In each case, the training is expected to require no more than 100 hours instruction.
34.2 TAFE courses
The Company will publish, with the agreement of the Training Subcommittee, a list of TAFE courses for the purpose of progression through the grades that are recognised as:
34.2.1 The successful completion of part of some TAFE courses may be deemed to be the equivalent to a course for this purpose.
34.2.2 The Training Subcommittee will ensure that such courses or part of courses are of approximately equal value in terms of skill acquisition.
34.2.3 The successful completion of the following courses, combination of courses, or parts of courses conducted by TAFE constitute skill enhancement and/or multi-skilling courses:

34.3 Company conducted courses
34.3.1 Any courses other than those listed in clause 34.2 and which are required for company operational requirements will be conducted by the appropriate company training organisation.
34.3.2 The Training Subcommittee will agree on the courses which are conducted by the company which constitute multi-skilling courses, skill flexibility courses or skill enhancement courses for the purpose of the grading structure.
34.3.3 The Training Subcommittee will ensure that these courses are of approximately equal value in terms of skill acquisition.
34.3.4 A prerequisite for avionic multi-skilling courses will be a trade certificate in one of the avionic fields.
34.4 Unlicensed engineering and maintenance
34.4.1 All employees are required to carry out work within their own and lower grades.
34.4.2 During assessment of new employees, experience gained in outside industry will be assessed against grading qualifications in order to determine and give credit for equivalent industry experience as appropriate to area of duty.
34.4.3 Where a new tradesperson is initially assess as being eligible for a grading above aircraft maintenance engineer - grade 1, a final assessment will be made in accordance with the grading procedures as defined.
34.4.4 All employees are required to participate in the “on the job” training of other employees within his or her normal work area in order to develop the overall skill base within the scope of this award.
34.5 Implementation of training and training courses
34.5.1 The parties shall establish committees as appropriate for the purpose of :
34.5.2 In addition to the above, the parties shall develop procedures for the composition of such committees and their role and functions.
34.6 Wage and allowances whilst training
34.6.1 Where an employee is required to attend an examination/s conducted by the company or the Department of Transport (Air Transport Group) and provided the application/s for such examination/s have been made through the Qantas Technical Training department the following provisions shall apply:
34.6.1(a) The employee shall be allowed time off without loss of pay (excluding shift penalties) for the purpose of attending such examination/s.
34.6.1(b) Where an employee is withdrawn from shift work to attend engineering Training School he/she shall be paid full salary including all shift allowances and week-end penalty rates that the employee would have received had they worked their normal roster.
34.6.1(c) Employees attending a training school away from their home base shall be provided with transport by the employer for the following:
34.6.1(d) Where an employee is required to travel to and from Engineering School,any time spent travelling on Saturdays, Sundays, rostered days off and public holidays shall be paid at the appropriate penalty rate.
34.6.1(e) This clause shall not apply to Licenced Aircraft Maintenance Engineers employed by the company.
