17. CLASSIFICATION DEFINITION

17.1.1 Classification definitions are set out in 31.1 for STIWs and STITs and 31.3 for STIEs.

17.1.2 In respect to the Jindalee Project Facilities classifications will be defined in accordance with the relevant Australian Public Service work level standards, as amended from time to time.

17.2 Apprentice rates of pay

17.2.1 Except as provided for in 17.3 (adult apprentices) the minimum weekly wage and hourly rate for apprentices will be the following:

17.2.2 An employee who is under 21 years of age on the expiration of their apprenticeship and thereafter works as a minor in the occupation to which the employee has been apprenticed will be paid at not less than the adult rate prescribed for the classification.

17.3 Adult apprentice rates of pay

17.3.1 Where a person was employed by an employer under this award immediately prior to becoming an adult apprentice with that employer, such person will not suffer a reduction in the rate of pay by virtue of becoming indentured.

17.3.2 For the purpose only of fixing a rate of pay the adult apprentice will continue to receive the rate of pay that is from time to time applicable to the classification or class of work specified in 5.1 and in which the adult apprentice was engaged immediately prior to entering into the contract of indenture.

17.4 Trainee rates of pay

17.4.1 Trainees engaged under the terms of the National Training Wage Award 1994 as amended, will be paid the appropriate wage rate set out in that award.

17.5 Exit from Traineeships

17.5.1 Employees who have completed a traineeship in accordance with the terms of the National Training Wage Award 1994 as amended, and are required to utilise the skills attained from their traineeship will be paid the appropriate rate set out in the tables below.

17.5.2 The appropriate classification will be the classification corresponding to the minimum training requirement or equivalent which is the normal outcome for the particular traineeship as advised by the Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Industry Advisory Body (MERSITAB) or the Administration Training Company hereinafter) referred to as “the appropriate ITAB). Provided that any additional competencies acquired during the period of experience during and subsequent to completion of the traineeship which are required or will be required to be utilised will also be taken into account. Provided further that where the outcome is less than the STIW8 level the employee will be given the opportunity to acquire the additional competencies and when this is achieved will be reclassified from STIW9 to STIW8. Provided that the attainment of these additional competencies meets the needs of the business. Where there is any disagreement over the application of this provision it will be dealt with in accordance with the avoidance of disputes procedure of this award.

17.5.3 The total weekly wage rates provided for in this clause will receive wage increases that are in proportion to the wage increases provided for the award rate at the Wage Group Level STIW 7 in respect to Skill Level B, Wage Group Level STIW 8 in respect to Skill Leave C, and Wage Group Level STIW 6 in respect to Skill Level A.

17.5.4 Whether a traineeship falls within skill Level A, Skill Level B or Skill Level C will be determined by the advice of the appropriate ITAB. Based upon the advice of the ITAB and Jobsko the Found Engineering Traineeship is a Skill Level C, the Engineering Traineeship is a Skill Level B and the Advanced Engineering Traineeship is a Skill Level B or Skill Level A depending on the level of the Engineering Production Certificate which the traineeship is designed to achieve, and the Engineering Traineeship Technician is a Skill Level A.
