4.1 Salon Manager or Principal - Grade 2
A Salon Manager or Principal - Grade 2 is a person who is the principal or manager of the salon, (i.e. the person for the time being entrusted with the control or superintendence of the salon despite that she or he may be under the orders of another person who does not devote his or her whole time to the management of the salon), and has completed at least an AQF 3 certificate in management and communications or otherwise a comparable course accredited by the State Training Board of Victoria (STBV) which is at least 100 hours in duration.
The 100 hours may include relevant modules from any STBV accredited course. The purpose of completing the training is to equip the person concerned with certain basic interpersonal and supervision skills to enable them to more effectively carry out their managerial functions.
4.2 Salon Manager or Principal - Grade 1
A Salon Manager or Principal Grade 1 is a person who is the principal or manager of the salon, (i.e. the person for the time being entrusted with the control or superintendence of the salon despite that she or he may be under the orders of another who does not devote his or whole time to the management of the salon).
4.3 Hairdresser Technician (C1) 120%
A Hairdresser Technician is a person who is a hairdresser as defined and who has also acquired the AQF Certificate 4 in Hairdressing or an equivalent, and has 7 years of salon experience.
A Hairdresser Technician works above and beyond an employee at C2 level or below and to the level of her or his training.
A Hairdresser Technician:
4.3.1 has an overall knowledge and understanding of the trade beyond that of a person at C5 or C3 level;
4.3.2 provides technical assistance or advice within the scope of this level;
4.3.3 understands and applies quality control techniques;
4.3.4 exercises discretion within the scope of this grade;
4.3.5 works under minimal supervision either individually or in a team environment;
4.3.6 is able to inspect outcomes for conformity with established operational standards;
4.3.7 assists in the provision of on-the-job training;
4.3.8 performs duties which require judgment and skill in excess of that required of employees at lower levels;
4.3.9 controls, subject to employer requirements, own work schedule;
4.3.10 exercises sound interpersonal and communications skills;
4.3.11 operates all equipment essential to or incidental to his or her work;
4.3.12 performs non-trade tasks incidental to his or her work.
Tasks which an employee at this level may perform are subject to the employee having the appropriate trade and post trade training to enable the employee to perform such particular tasks.
4.4 Advanced Beauty Therapist (C1) 120%
An Advanced Beauty Therapist is a person who holds an AQF Diploma of Beauty Therapy or the equivalent thereof or who otherwise has successfully completed a course accredited by the State Training Board of Victoria, or whose qualifications are recognised by the Hairdressing and Beauty Industry Association, the Australian Federation of Aestheticians and Beauty Therapists, the Advanced Association of Beauty Therapists, or the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees’ Association who is capable of undertaking the responsibilities listed below if required by the employer with these responsibilities becoming part of the employees job description.
An Advanced Beauty Therapist works above and beyond an employee at C2 level or below and to the level of her or his training.
An Advanced Beauty Therapist:
4.4.1 has the skills and knowledge of a Beauty Therapist defined at C2;
4.4.2 has an overall knowledge and understanding of the occupation;
4.4.3 provides technical advice and assistance within the scope of this level;
4.4.4 understands and applies quality control techniques;
4.4.5 exercises discretion within the scope of this grade;
4.4.6 works under minimal supervision either individually or in a team environment;
4.4.7 is able to inspect outcomes for conformity with established operational standards;
4.4.8 assists in the provision of on-the-job training;
4.4.9 performs duties which require judgement and skill in excess of that required of employees at lower levels;
4.4.10 controls, subject to employer requirements, own work schedule;
4.4.11 exercises sound interpersonal and communications skills;
4.4.12 operates all equipment essential or incidental to her or his work;
4.4.13 performs non-trade tasks incidental to her or his work.
Indicative of the tasks an Advanced Beauty Therapist may perform include those of a Beauty Therapist as defined, permanent epilation treatments, diathermy service, design and application of cosmetic tattooing, micropigmentation procedures, investigation of new products and services, training, assessment of workplace competencies and/or staff supervision.
Tasks which an employee at this level may perform are subject to the employee having appropriate trade and post trade training to enable them to perform the particular tasks.
4.5 Beauty Therapist (C2) 110%
A Beauty Therapist is a person who holds an AQF Certificate IV in Beauty Therapy or the equivalent thereof or who otherwise has successfully completed a Beauty Therapy course accredited by the State Training Board of Victoria or whose qualifications are recognised by the Hairdressing and Beauty Industry Association, the Australian Federation of Aestheticians and Beauty Therapists, the Advanced Association of Beauty Therapists, or the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees’ Association who is engaged in facial and body therapy.
A Beauty Therapist works above and beyond an employee at C3 level or below and the level of her or his training.
A Beauty Therapist:
4.5.1 exercises the skills and knowledge of Beauty Therapy;
4.5.2 understands and applies quality control techniques;
4.5.3 exercises good interpersonal and communications skills;
4.5.4 exercises discretion within the scope of this grade;
4.5.5 performs work under limited supervision either individually or in a team environment;
4.5.6 operates all equipment essential or incidental to her or his work;
4.5.7 performs non-Beauty Therapy tasks incidental to her or his work;
4.5.8 is responsible for assuring the quality of her or his work;
4.5.9 is able to inspect outcomes for conformity with established operational standards;
4.5.10 provides guidance and assistance to others as required by the employer;
4.5.11 controls, subject to employer requirements, own work schedule.
A person in this classification must have at least 12 months' post-qualification experience in industry.
Indicative of the tasks a Beauty Therapist may perform facial treatments, temporary epilation and bleaching treatments, manicare, pedicare, design and application of make-up, ear piercing, service and advice to salon clients, selling of products, body treatments and aesthetic aromatherapy massage.
4.6 Advanced Hairdresser (C3) 108%
An Advanced Hairdresser is a person who is a Hairdresser as defined and who has also completed at least 3 units of the AQF Certificate 4 in Hairdressing and who has been employed specifically as a Technician on those areas and/or to train other staff.
An Advanced Hairdresser, in addition to being able to perform the work of a hairdresser, works above and beyond a Hairdresser and to the level of her or his training.
An Advanced Hairdresser:
4.6.1 exercises the advanced skills obtained through the satisfactory completion of relevant AQF Certificate 4 in Hairdressing units;
4.6.2 understands and applies quality control techniques;
4.6.3 exercises discretion within the scope of this grade;
4.6.4 performs work under limited supervision either individually or in a team environment;
4.6.5 is able to inspect outcomes for conformity with established operational standards;
4.6.6 provides guidance and assistance to others as required by the employer;
4.6.7 controls, subject to employer requirements, own work schedule;
4.6.8 exercises sound interpersonal and communications skills;
4.6.9 operates all equipment essential or incidental to her or his work;
4.6.10 controls, subject to employer requirements, own work schedule;
4.6.11 performs non-trade tasks incidental to her or his work.
Tasks which an employee at this level may perform are subject to the employee having the appropriate trade and post-trade training to enable them to perform such particular tasks.
Indicative of the tasks an Advanced Hairdresser may perform are trade tasks plus the specialist skills acquired through the successful completion of units in AQF Certificate 4 in Hairdressing
4.7 Beauty Therapist - with less than 12 months' experience (C4) 105%
A person in this classification is as for a Beauty Therapist except that they have had less than 12 months’ post-qualification experience in industry.
A Hairdresser is an employee who holds an AQF Certificate 3 in Hairdressing or the equivalent thereof as determined by the State Training Board of Victoria or recognised by the Hairdressing and Beauty Industry Association or the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association and can demonstrate they have at least 1000 hours either pre or post graduate commercial salon experience.
A Hairdresser works above and beyond an employee at C9, C8 or C7 levels and to the level of her/his training.
A Hairdresser:
4.8.1 exercises the skills and knowledge of the trade;
4.8.2 understands and applies quality control techniques;
4.8.3 exercises good interpersonal and communications skills;
4.8.4 exercises discretion within the scope of this grade;
4.8.5 performs work under limited supervision either individually or in a team environment;
4.8.6 operates all equipment essential or incidental to her or his work;
4.8.7 performs non-trade tasks incidental to her or his work;
4.8.8 performs work which while primarily involving the skills of the employee's trade is incidental or peripheral to the primary task and facilitates the completion of the whole task;
4.8.9 is able to inspect outcomes for conformity with established operational standards;
4.8.10 controls, subject to employer requirements, own work schedule;
4.8.11 provides limited guidance and assistance to apprentices as required by the employer.
4.9 Beautician or Cosmetologist (C5) 100%
A Beautician or Cosmetologist is a person who holds an AQF Certificate III in Beauty or the equivalent thereof or who has otherwise successfully completed a relevant Course accredited by the State Training Board of Victoria or recognised by the Hairdressing and Beauty Industry Association, the Australian Federation of Aestheticians and Beauty Therapists, the Advanced Association of Beauty Therapists or the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association.
A Beautician or Cosmetologist works above and beyond an employee at C7 or below and to the level of her or his training.
A Beautician or Cosmetologist:
4.9.1 exercises the skills and knowledge of a Beautician or Cosmetologist;
4.9.2 understands and applies quality control techniques;
4.9.3 exercises good interpersonal and communications skills as for lower levels but above those of lower levels in regard to client consultation and advice;
4.9.4 exercises discretion within the scope of this grade;
4.9.5 performs work under general supervision either individually or in a team environment;
4.9.6 operates all equipment essential or incidental to her or his work;
4.9.7 performs non-Beautician or Cosmetologist tasks incidental to her or his work which she or he is competent to perform;
4.9.8 is able to inspect outcomes for conformity with established operational standards;
4.9.9 provides limited guidance and assistance to others as required by the employer;
4.9.10 controls, subject to employer requirements, own work schedule.
Indicative of the tasks a Beautician or Cosmetologist performs are facial treatment (including massage in connection with such treatment), the design and application of make-up, eye brow shaping and eye brow and eye lash treatments , manicare and pedicare, ear piercing temporary epilation and bleaching treatments, service and advice to clients, nail enhancement and art and selling of products.
A Beautician or Cosmetologist does not perform any work on a person's body except for the face, hands and/or feet.
Note - A person performing work or providing treatments to other parts of the body is to be classified at C2, C3, or C8 according to their qualifications.
4.10 Nail Technician (Small Business) (C5) 100%
A Nail Technician (Small Business) is a person who holds an AQF Certificate III in Nail Technology (Small Business) or the equivalent thereof. or who has otherwise successfully completed a course accredited by the State Training Board of Victoria or recognized by the Hairdressing and Beauty Industry Association, the Australian Federation of Aestheticians and Beauty Therapists, the Advanced Association of Beauty Therapists or the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association
A Nail Technician (Small Business) works above and beyond an employee at C7 or below and to the level of her or his training.
A Nail Technician (Small Business):
4.10.1 exercises the skills and knowledge of a Nail Technician who also holds small business skills;
4.10.2 understands and applies quality control techniques;
4.10.3 exercises good interpersonal and communications skills as for lower levels but above those of lower levels in regard to client consultation and advice;
4.10.4 exercises discretion within the scope of this grade;
4.10.5 performs work under general supervision either individually or in a team environment;
4.10.6 operates all equipment essential or incidental to her or his work;
4.10.7 performs tasks incidental to her or his work which she or he is competent to perform;
4.10.8 is able to inspect outcomes for conformity with established operational standards;
4.10.9 provides limited guidance and assistance to others as required;
4.10.10 controls, subject to employer requirements, own work schedule.
Indicative of the tasks a Nail Technician (Small Business) performs are manicare, pedicare, nail enhancements, nail art, service and advice to salon clients and selling of products. A Nail Technician (Small Business) also holds qualifications in the area of small business as set out above.
4.11 Electrologist (C6) 95%
An Electrologist is a person who has completed an Electrologists Course accredited by the State Training Board or recognised by the Hairdressing and Beauty Industry Association, the Australian Federation of Aestheticians and Beauty Therapists, the Advanced Association of Beauty Therapists or the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association.
An Electrologist:
4.11.1 exercises the skills and knowledge of a person trained in thermolysis/electrolysis;
4.11.2 understands and applies quality control techniques;
4.11.3 exercises good interpersonal and communications skills;
4.11.4 exercises discretion within the scope of this grade;
4.11.5 performs work under general supervision either individually or in a team environment;
4.11.6 operates all equipment essential or incidental to her or his work;
4.11.7 performs non-electrologists tasks incidental to her or his work which she or he is competent to perform;
4.11.8 is able to inspect outcomes for conformity with established operational standards;
4.11.9 provides limited guidance and assistance to others as required by the employer;
4.11.10 controls, subject to employer requirements, own work schedule.
Note-A person holding qualifications as in C2, C3 or C4 is to be paid the rates set out thereunder even if such person is only exercising the skills and knowledge related to electrolysis/thermolysis.
4.12 Hairdressing Graduate 92.5%
A Hairdressing Graduate is a person who has obtained a tradesperson’s certificate issued by the State Training Board of Victoria and or the Hairdressing and Beauty Industry Association of Victoria, or the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association and who has not had 1000 hours of experience in a commercial hairdressing salon. For the purpose of this award a college based salon is not considered to be a commercial salon.
A Hairdressing Graduate should be able to:
4.12.1 understand and apply quality control techniques;
4.12.2 exercise discretion within the scope of this grade;
4.12.3 perform work under regular supervision either individually or in a team environment;
4.12.4 operate all equipment essential or incidental to her or his work;
4.12.5 perform non-trade tasks incidental to her or his work;
4.12.6 perform work which while primarily involving the skills of the employee's trade is incidental or peripheral to the primary task and facilitates the completion of the whole task;
4.13 Hairdressing Trainee
A Hairdressing Trainee is a person undergoing a full time training course and is not an apprentice who is employed under a contract of training.
Trainees have not completed their training and therefore they are not considered to be fully competent in hairdressing skills. During the training period a trainee may work in a commercial salon (other than a college based salon) and should be able to:
4.13.1 exercise the skills and knowledge relevant at this level;
4.13.2 perform work under routine supervision either individually or in a team environment;
4.13.3 operate equipment essential or incidental to their work;
4.13.4 exercise sound interpersonal and communication skills; and
4.13.5 exercise limited discretion.
A hairdressing trainee is to perform tasks as deemed competent by and directed by the employer.
4.14 Short Term Apprentice (C7) 92.5%
A short term apprentice is a person who has applied to the State Training Board of Victoria for certification as a hairdresser and who has subsequently been required by the State Training Board to undertake a short term apprenticeship of one year or less in order to gain such certification.
A short term apprentice is to work according to the terms and conditions laid down by the State Training Board.
4.15 Nail Technician (C7) 92.5%
A Nail Technician is a person who holds an AQF Certificate II in Nail Technology or the equivalent thereof or who has otherwise successfully completed a relevant Course accredited by the State Training Board of Victoria or recognised by the Hairdressing and Beauty Industry Association, the Australian Federation of Aestheticians and Beauty Therapists, the Advanced Association of Beauty Therapists or the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association.
A Nail Technician works above and beyond an employee at C8 or below and to the level of her or his training.
A Nail Technician:
4.15.1 exercises the skills and knowledge of a Nail Technician;
4.15.2 understands and applies quality control techniques;
4.15.3 exercises good interpersonal and communications skills as for lower levels but above those of lower levels in regard to client consultation and advice;
4.15.4 exercises discretion within the scope of this grade;
4.15.5 performs work under general supervision either individually or in a team environment;
4.15.6 operates all equipment essential or incidental to her or his work;
4.15.7 performs non-Beautician or Cosmetologist tasks incidental to her or his work which she or he is competent to perform;
4.15.8 is able to inspect outcomes for conformity with established operational standards;
4.15.9 provides limited guidance and assistance to others as required by the employer;
4.15.10 controls, subject to employer requirements, own work schedule.
Indicative of the tasks a Nail Technician may perform are manicare, pedicare, nail enhancement, nail art and selling of beauty products.
4.16 Make-Up Artist (C7) 92.5%
A Make-up Artist is a person who holds an AQF Certificate II in Make-up Artistry or the equivalent thereof or who has otherwise successfully completed a relevant Course accredited by the State Training Board of Victoria or recognised by the Hairdressing and Beauty Industry Association, the Australian Federation of Aestheticians and Beauty Therapists, the Advanced Association of Beauty Therapists or the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association.
A Make-up Artist works above and beyond an employee at C7 or below and to the level of her or his training.
A Make-up Artist:
4.16.1 exercises the skills and knowledge of a Make-up Artist;
4.16.2 understands and applies quality control techniques;
4.16.3 exercises good interpersonal and communications skills as for lower levels but above those of lower levels in regard to client consultation and advice;
4.16.4 exercises discretion within the scope of this grade;
4.16.5 performs work under general supervision either individually or in a team environment;
4.16.6 operates all equipment essential or incidental to her or his work;
4.16.7 performs non-Beautician or Cosmetologist tasks incidental to her or his work which she or he is competent to perform;
4.16.8 is able to inspect outcomes for conformity with established operational standards;
4.16.16 provides limited guidance and assistance to others as required by the employer;
4.16.10 controls, subject to employer requirements, own work schedule.
Indicative of the tasks a Make-up Artist may perform are demonstration of retail skin care products, design and application of make-up (including photography and remedial camouflage and selling of beauty products.
4.17 Beauty Worker (C8) 87%
A Beauty Worker is a person working in the beauty industry who is not an Advanced Beauty Therapist (as defined), Beauty Therapist (as defined) Beauty Therapist-with less than 12 months' experience (as defined), Electrologist (as defined), Beautician or Cosmetologist (as defined), Nail Technician (as defined), Nail Technician ( as defined) or Make-Up Artist ( as defined).
A Beauty Worker is a person who is qualified to perform work within the scope of this classification.
A Beauty Worker is a person working in or in connection with the beauty industry who is not qualified in any higher classification in this award.
A Beauty Worker may carry out any tasks carried on by a person in a higher classification in this award but by virtue of the fact that such person does not hold a recognised qualification in an accredited course relating to any of the higher classifications in the award may be classified here.
A Beauty Worker, irrespective of the above may carry out one or more of the following tasks:
A Beauty Worker:
4.17.1 Exercises the skills and knowledge and discretion relevant to this level;
4.17.2 Performs work under routine supervision either individually or in a team environment;
4.17.3 Operates equipment essential or incidental to her or his work;
4.17.4 Exercises sound interpersonal and communication skills (which includes the ability to speak and write English, to carry out receptionist/telephonist duties in a salon, to consult and advise clients, to carry out bank transactions, basic financial record keeping and to maintain file records).
4.17.5 Is responsible for the quality of her or his work subject to routine supervision.
An employee at this level performs work above and beyond the skills of an employee at lower levels and to the level of her or his training.
4.18 Hairworker (C8) 87%
A Hairworker is a person who is qualified to perform work within the scope of this level.
A Hairworker is a person working in or in connection with the hairdressing industry who is not qualified in any higher classification in this award.
An employee at this level performs work above and beyond the skills of an employee at lower levels and to the level of her or his training.
An employee at this level:
4.18.1 is responsible for the quality of her or his own work subject to routine supervision;
4.18.2 works under routine supervision either individually or in a team environment;
4.18.3 exercises the skills and knowledge and discretion relevant to this level;
4.18.4 exercises sound interpersonal and communication skills (which include the ability to speak and write English to carry out receptionist/telephonist duties in a salon to consult and advise clients to carry out bank transactions, basic financial record keeping and to maintain file records);
4.18.5 operates equipment essential or incidental to her or his work.
A Hairworker may carry out one or more of the following tasks:
4.19 Salon Assistant (C9) 85%
A Salon Assistant is an employee who has received training sufficient to enable her or him to perform the work required at this level.
Indicative of the tasks a Salon Assistant may perform are:
A Salon Assistant:
4.19.1 performs work under direct supervision either individually or in a team environment;
4.19.2 is responsible for the quality of her or his own work;
4.19.3 exercises limited discretion within the scope of this grade;
4.19.4 operates all equipment essential or incidental to her or his work;
4.19.5 is not required to have previous training or experience to work at this level;
4.19.6 is expected to possess basic communications skills (e.g. ability to speak and write English, simple numeracy) and interpersonal skills.
4.20 Rostered Day Off
A rostered day off refers to a day on which a full time employee is not rostered to work.
4.21 The union
The union, where referred to in this Award means the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees' Association.
4.22 Continuous Service
4.22.1 For the purposes of this award a year of employment will be considered unbroken regardless of:
4.22.1(a) any annual leave or long service leave taken;
4.22.1(b) any interruption or ending of the employment by the employer where the interruption or ending is made with the intention of avoiding annual leave or long service leave obligations;
4.22.1(c) any absence from work for up to a maximum of fourteen days in the year of employment for reasons of sickness or accident;
4.22.1(d) any absence for reasons of leave( other than annual leave or long service leave) granted, imposed or agreed to by the employer;
4.22.1(e) any absence on any other account not involving termination of employment
4.22.2 In calculating a year of employment those absences set out in 4.22(a).4.22.1(b0, or 4.22.1(c) must be counted as part of the year of employment. However for those absences set out in 4.22.1(d) and 4.22.1(e) it is necessary for the employee, as part of his or her qualification for annual leave, to serve the additional time which equates equals the period of the absences.
