20. ALLOWANCES

20.1 Educational fees

All related fees shall be reimbursed by the employer to the employee upon successful completion of any course, provided it is relevant to the type of skills which can be used by the employee in his/her present or potential employment with the employer.

20.2 Fares and travelling time

20.2.1 For all employees who are required to work away from their respective works and who are to commence on the job at the usual commencing time and finish on the job at the usual finishing time shall be paid fares and travelling time as follows:

20.2.2 Payment to be based on a radius of 30 km from the depot at the rate of $11.28 per day.

20.2.3 This scale can be extended by adding an additional amount of $3.77 per day for each additional ten kilometres or part thereof.

20.3 First aid allowance

An employee who holds an accredited certificate in first aid and is appointed by the employer to give first aid during emergencies shall be paid an additional $12.75 per week.

20.4 Meal time and allowances

20.4.1 Except as provided elsewhere in this clause, a meal break of at least 30 minutes shall be allowed to employees other than shift workers.

20.4.2 Such meal breaks shall begin at noon or at such other regular time as may be agreed upon by the employer and employees concerned, but in special circumstances of emergency only, the employer may require it to begin at some definite time not earlier than 11.30 a.m. or later than 12.30 p.m.

20.4.3 Any employee required to work throughout more than five hours without a suitable interval for a meal, shall, for all time worked in excess of the five hours before being allowed such interval, be paid at double time, until such suitable interval for a meal has been taken.

20.4.4 If an employee is required to continue or resume work during the prescribed meal break he/she shall, for the time of continuous or resumption until the full meal break is given be entitled to be paid at time and a half.

20.4.5 lf the prescribed meal break of an employee is shortened he/she shall, for the time of the shortened meal break, be entitled to be paid at time and a half.

20.4.6 An employee required to work overtime extending beyond 5.45 p.m., on an ordinary working day (Monday to Friday) or beyond 12.30 p.m. on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, or to work on afternoon shift without having been notified on the previous day that he/she would be so required, shall be paid a meal allowance of $12.03.

Where overtime continues a further five hours beyond the time the first meal payment becomes due, but not including the time of the meal break, a further meal allowance of $12.03 shall be paid. If overtime then continues beyond a further five hours, not including the time of the meal break, the employee will be paid an additional meal allowance of $12.03.

20.5 Rest breaks

Employees shall be entitled to one rest break of fifteen minutes per day to be taken no sooner than 1.5 hours, and no later than 2.5 hours after normal starting time.

20.6 Telephone account

20.6.1 Any employee required to be on call shall have their telephone rental paid and 1/3rd of their local calls paid by the employer.

20.6.2 STD calls and other service charges will be paid by the employee unless evidence is established that they were incurred on behalf of the employer.

20.7.2 The allowances provided in 20.7.1 shall be deemed to be part of an employee’s ordinary rate of wage for all purposes of this award.

20.8 Industry allowance

All employees paid under Schedule A - Section 1 [South Australia] of this award shall be paid an industry allowance of $15.94 per week.

20.9 Overseers allowance

In South Australia, overseers when in control of up to and including five persons, an allowance of $4.52 per day shall be paid. When in control of six persons and over, an allowance of $7.10 per day shall be paid.

20.10.1 The allowance shall be deemed to be part of an employees ordinary rate for all purposes of this award.

20.11 X-ray welders allowance

20.11.1 In South Australia, a tradesperson shall be paid an additional amount of $23.61 per week. This allowance does not apply to an employee who is classified in the wage rates under this section as an X-ray welder.

20.11.2 In Victoria, a tradesperson shall be paid an additional amount of $25.56 per week, such amount to be counted for all purposes, should they hold the appropriate qualifications to perform X-ray welding.

20.12 Dirt money

In South Australia, any employee performing work which is considered to be of an unusually dirty or offensive nature shall be paid 56 cents per hour.

20.13 Tool allowance

20.13.1 All tradespersons shall be paid an allowance as set out in 20.13.5 for supplying and maintaining tools ordinarily required in the performance of the work as tradesmen.

The allowances in 20.13.5 shall be deemed to be part of an employee’s ordinary rate of pay for all purposes of this award.

20.13.2 Where it is the practice for the employer to provide all tools ordinarily required by tradespersons in the performance of their work, the employer may continue that practice and in that event the allowance prescribed in 20.13.5 shall not apply to such tradespersons.

20.13.3 Notwithstanding 20.13.1 and 20.13.2 an employer shall provide for the use of tradespersons all necessary power tools, special purpose tools and precision measuring equipment.

20.13.4 Tradespersons shall replace or pay for any tools supplied by their employer if lost through negligence.

All employees in Victoria paid under this award shall be paid a special conditions allowance as follows:

In Victoria, an allowance of $4.04 per day to be paid to Mains and Service Workers when operating boring equipment.

20.16 Driving allowance

Employees in New South Wales employed in the following classifications who are required to drive a vehicle on any day or part thereof shall be paid an allowance of 69 cents per day as a flat amount:

20.17 Special disability allowance

20.17.1 In New South Wales, a special disability allowance of $27.89 per week shall be paid to all classifications. This allowance is compensation for all disabilities associated with day-to-day working in and from a depot in the gas industry and for those disabilities associated with the day-to-day activities with outdoor work without amenities.

20.17.2 The foregoing allowance shall be deemed to be part of an employee’s ordinary rate of pay for all purposes of this award.

20.18 Licenses

An employee whose duty requires that he/she be a licensed motor vehicle driver shall have his/her license fees reimbursed by the employer.

20.19 Protective clothing

20.19.1 The employer shall reimburse to an employee the cost of any protective apparel, rain wear or waterproof clothing, first aid outfits and gas masks where an employee is working with live gas or where it is deemed necessary, required to be worn by an employee.

20.19.2 Employees shall be reimbursed for the cost of overalls unless the employer supplies the overalls.
