22. SHIFT WORK

22.1 Any employee who consents to perform shift work may be engaged upon shifts in accordance with the provisions of this clause.

22.2 Afternoon shift means any shift finishing after 6.00 p.m. and at or before midnight.

22.3 Night shift means any shift finishing subsequent to midnight and at or before 8.00 a.m.

22.4 Hours of work

22.4.1 The ordinary hours of such shift shall not exceed 38 in any one week, to be worked in five shifts of eight hours duration between Monday and 8.00 a.m. Saturday morning.

22.4.2 Such ordinary hours are to be worked continuously, except for a 30 minute meal break by agreement between the employer and the union. Such meal break to be counted as time worked.

22.5 Allowance

22.5.1 Shift workers, whilst engaged on afternoon shifts, shall be paid 30% more than the ordinary rate for such shifts. A night shift worker shall be paid 35% more than the ordinary rates for such shifts.

22.5.2 The minimum rate to be paid to any shift worker for work performed between midnight Friday and 8.00 a.m. Saturday shall be 40% more than the ordinary rate. Such extra rate shall be in substitution for and not cumulative upon the shift premium prescribed in 22.5.1.

22.5.3 Employees engaged as leading hands on shift work will receive the shift penalty on the wage which represents their ordinary rate plus leading hand allowance.

22.6 Overtime

Shift workers for all time worked in excess of eight hours on any one shift, or outside the spread of hours for shift workers, shall be paid at the rate of time and a half for the first two hours and double time thereafter.
