5.3 JUNIOR WORKERS

5.3.1 The minimum rates of wages payable to juniors shall be calculated as follows:

5.3.2 Junior rates shall be calculated in multiples of 10 cents with any result of 5 cents or more being taken to the next highest 10 cent multiple.

And thereafter the minimum rate of wages prescribed for adults.

5.3.3 The proportion of junior workers employed by any employer shall be one junior to 4 adults or 2 juniors to 8 adults but no more than 2 juniors in all may be employed in any establishment:

Provided that the above proportion of juniors shall not apply to employees of Dalgety-Winchombe, the United Graziers' Co-operative Shearing Company Limited, the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. Ltd., the Australian Estates Company (Qld.) Pty. Ltd., and Goldsborough Mort and Co. Ltd. The following conditions shall apply to juniors and trainees employed by Grazcos Co-operative Limited, the United Graziers' Co-operative Shearing Company Limited, the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. Ltd., the Australian Estates Company (Qld.) Pty. Ltd., and Goldsborough Mort and Co. Ltd.

5.3.4 The proportion of juniors excluding trainees, shall not exceed one junior to every 3 adults.

5.3.5 A junior is an employee under the age of 20 years principally employed in gathering wool, sweeping, placing wool in bins, carrying out light work of a similar nature.

5.3.6 Trainee shall mean an employee under the age of 20 years who is normally engaged in the classing of wool at a wool table under the directions of a supervisor and in carrying out general store work incidental thereto.

5.3.7 The proportion of trainees to wool sorters, as defined in clause 1.5.4, shall not exceed one trainee for every 2 wool sorters:

Provided, however, that if the proportion of juniors and/or trainees at any time becomes excessive through adult employees leaving, no junior or trainee shall be automatically dismissed as a consequence thereof.

5.3.8 Trainees in addition to the rates prescribed herein for juniors shall be paid a further $4.00 per week during their first year as trainee, $6.20 per week in their second year and $8.20 per week in their third year or subsequent years until they reach the age of 20 years.
