28. EMERGENCY DUTY

28.1 Where an employee is called on duty to meet an emergency at a time when the employee would not ordinarily have been on duty, and no notice was given to him/her prior to his/her ceasing duty, the employee will be paid for such emergency duty at the rate of double time. The time for which payment will be made will include time necessarily spent in travelling to and from duty. The minimum payment under this clause will be for two hours at double time. The minimum payment for emergency duty on a Sunday will be three hours for the first call out.

28.2 Emergency duty on Public holidays will be paid under Emergency duty conditions except where payment under the Public holiday overtime provisions, described in 27.6.3 would be higher.

28.3 If in the opinion of the employee’s supervisor it is essential in the interests of health that respite from work be granted to the employee who has been called up for emergency duty, the employee may be relieved from duty on his/her next regular shift, without reduction from his/her wages, for a period not exceeding the number of hours extra duty worked. In no case will the period of relief from duty extend into the next rostered shift.

28.4 If an employee uses his/her own motor vehicle to attend for or return home from Emergency duty, he/she will be entitled to a Motor vehicle allowance as prescribed in 24.10.

28.5 This clause will not apply to employees whose duty for the day is varied by alteration of the commencement of the scheduled shift to meet an emergency.
