6. DEFINITIONS

6.1 Commission shall mean the Australian Industrial Relations Commission.

6.2 Continuous Shift Work shall mean work done by an employee where the hours of work are regularly rotated through day, evening and night shifts covering a 24 hour per day operation over seven days of the week and 52 weeks of the year. The above definition shall refer to a category (B) employee.

6.3 Evening Shift shall mean any shift finishing after 9.00 p.m. and at or before midnight or where the majority of hours are worked between 7.00 p.m. and midnight.

6.4 Night Shift shall mean any shift finishing after midnight and at or before 8.00 a.m or where the majority of hours fall between those hours.

6.5 On Call shall mean a written instruction to an employee to remain at the employee’s residence or to otherwise be immediately contactable by telephone or paging system outside the employee’s normal hours of duty in case of a call out requiring an immediate return to duty.

6.6 Shift Work shall mean work done by separate relays of employees, worked in accordance with a roster which prescribes two or more shifts (day, evening or night) per day, but does not cover a 24 hour per day operation over a seven day week. The above definition shall refer to a category (A) employee.

6.7 Standby shall mean a written instruction to an employee to remain at the employer’s place of employment during any period outside the employee’s normal hours of duty, and to perform certain designated tasks periodically or on an ad hoc basis.
