25. ALLOWANCES

25.1 Qualification allowances

25.1.1 License payments

In addition to the rates set out in 21.1, an employee holding an appropriate license and performing work that is relevant to that license, on aircraft that are maintained by Virgin Tech will receive the following payments.

25.1.1(a) Classic aircraft rating is $31.01 per week.

25.1.1(b) Next generation aircraft rating is $39.25 per week.

25.1.1(c) The first mechanical or avionic type rating will be considered the base rating for advancement from LAME grade 2 to grade 3 (20.3) and will not attract any additional payment.

25.1.1(d) If an employee is holding multiple ratings in mechanical and/or avionics and is required to perform work within the scope of those ratings, then an employee will receive a multiple payment of the allowances contained in 25.1.1(a) and 25.1.1(b), to a maximum of three such ratings payments per week.

25.1.1(e) For the purpose of this clause a LAME holding an airframe/engine rating on B737-300/400 and B737-600/700/800/900 aircraft, the allowance would be treated as follows:

25.1.1(e)(i) No additional payment for airframe/engine ratings on B737-300/400 as this is considered the base rating for advancement from LAME grade 2 to grade 3.

25.1.1(e)(ii) Additional allowance of $76.04 per week for airframe/engine ratings for B737-600/700/800/900 aircraft.

25.1.1(f) For the purpose of this clause a LAME holding an electrical/instrument/radio rating on B737-300/400 and B737-600/700/800/900 aircraft, the allowance would be treated as follows:

25.1.1(f)(i) No additional payment for electrical/instrument/radio ratings on B737-300/400 as this is considered the base rating for advancement from LAME grade 2 to grade 3.

25.1.1(f)(ii) Additional allowance of $114.06 per week for electrical/instrument/radio ratings for B737-600/700/800/900 aircraft.

25.1.2 First aid allowance

An employee who has been trained to render first aid and who is the current holder of appropriate first aid qualifications such as a certificate from St. John Ambulance or similar body will be paid a weekly allowance of $10.98 if the employee is appointed by Virgin Tech to perform first aid duty.

25.2 Work related allowances

25.2.1 Tool allowance

25.2.1(a) A tradesperson will be paid an allowance of $13.60 week for supplying and maintaining tools ordinarily required in the performance of the employee’s work as a tradesperson. The allowance will be paid for all purposes of the award.

25.2.1(b) Where it is the practice for Virgin Tech to provide all tools ordinarily required by a tradesperson or an apprentice in the performance of the employee’s work, Virgin Tech may continue that practice and in that event the allowance prescribed in 35.1 will not apply to such tradespersons or apprentices.

25.2.1(c) A tradesperson or apprentice will replace or pay for any tools supplied by Virgin Tech if lost through the employee’s negligence.

25.2.2 Disability allowances

Employees will, in addition to the rates elsewhere prescribed by this award, be paid the following special allowances but such special allowances will not be subject to penalty rates for overtime, Sunday or holiday pay or work.

25.2.2(a) Cold places

Working in places where the temperature is five degrees Celsius - 40c per hour extra. Where the work continues for more than two hours, employees will be entitled to a rest period of twenty minutes every two hours without loss of pay.

25.2.2(b) Hot places

25.2.2(b)(i) Working for more than one hour in the shade in places where the temperature is raised by artificial means to between 46 to 54 degrees Celsius - 49c per hour extra; in places where the temperature exceeds 54 degrees Celsius - 49c per hour extra.

25.2.2(b)(ii) Where work continues for more than two hours in temperatures exceeding 54ºC, employees will also be entitled to twenty minutes rest after every two hours work without deduction of pay. The temperature will be decided by the supervisor of the work after consultation with the employees who claim the extra rate.

25.2.2(c) Wet places

An employee working in any place where the employee’s clothing or boots become saturated, whether by water, oil or otherwise, will be paid 40c per hour extra for part of the day or shift as the employee is required to work in wet clothing or boots.

25.2.2(d) Height money

Employees working at a height in each case of 6.09 metres or more above ground level - 28c per hour extra.

25.2.2(e) Fibre glass

Employees handling fibre glass materials or material of a like nature, when so employed - 48c per hour extra.

25.2.2(f) Confined spaces

All employees working in a confined space (excluding aircraft fuel tanks) which means a small compartment or place where work is done which necessitates an employee working in a stooping or otherwise cramped or uncomfortable position - 47c per hour extra whilst so engaged.

25.2.2(g) Dirty work

Employees who are required to work in oily conditions, on batteries or engine exhaust systems or landing gear assemblies (including wheels and brakes) or toilets or aircraft buffet units or any work which is of a dirty or offensive nature - 37c per hour extra. Employees engaged on such work will be entitled to shower and change during normal working time.

25.2.2(h) Fuel tanks

Employees who are required to perform work inside fuels tanks of aircraft - 71c per hour extra.

25.2.2(i) Cumulative/non-cumulative allowances

The special rates provided in this clause will in respect of cold places, confined spaces, dirty work, height money, hot places or wet places, are cumulative if any two or more of them occur at the same time, but otherwise the rates in this award will not be cumulative and Virgin Tech will be bound only to pay the highest rate for the disabilities prevailing.

25.3 Expense related allowances

25.3.1 Meals, travel and accommodation allowances

Expense related allowances are contained in 30.4 - Meal allowance and 36.1 - Travelling time and board.

25.3.2 Clothing allowance

Where Virgin Tech requires an employee to wear any special clothing such as, overalls, dust coats, shorts, socks or shirts and any other articles of clothing, Virgin Tech must reimburse the employee for the cost of purchasing such special clothing. The provisions of this clause do not apply where the special clothing is paid for by Virgin Tech.
