Date of registration: 11 September 1962, originally as The Building Workers’ Industrial Union of Australia
The structure of the organisation incorporates divisions, to which the members of the organisation are attached, namely:
- the Construction and General Division; and
- the Maritime Union of Australia Division.
The Manufacturing Division withdrew from its amalgamation with the CFMEU as of 17 April 2026 and is now the Timber Furnishing and Textiles Union. Their rule books and documents following this date can be found on the Timber Furnishing and Textiles Union page of this website.
The Mining and Energy Division withdrew from its amalgamation with the CFMEU as of 1 December 2023 and is now the Mining and Energy Union. Their rule books and documents following this date can be found on the Mining and Energy Union page of this website.
The organisation and each of its divisions have their own discrete set of rules by which they are governed.
The members of the divisions are also divided into branches.
The supreme governing body of the organisation is vested in the National Conference, which consists of the members of each Divisional Executive of the organisation.
The organisation’s structure also incorporates a National Executive, National Executive Committee, Divisional Conferences and Divisional Executives.
