About the mapping documents

Further to the methodology described in Fair Work Australia Research Report 2/2012 – Analysing modern award coverage using the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification 2006: Phase 1 report (pdf) Fair Work Australia (now the Fair Work Commission) staff have prepared mapping documents comparing modern award coverage with the class/4 digit industry descriptions in the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification 2006 (ANZSIC).

ANZSIC, including the class/4 digit industry descriptions used in the mapping documents, is a joint publication of the Australian Bureau of Statistics and Statistics New Zealand.

The allocation of class/4 digit codes to modern awards in the mapping documents is indicative only. The coverage clause, classifications and any exclusions contained within modern awards determine their coverage. Employers or employees seeking advice to determine which modern award may cover them should contact the Fair Work Ombudsman.

A guide has been prepared to assist in reading and understanding the mapping documents, including the colour coding system used. More detailed information about the process used to compare modern award coverage with class/4 digit industry descriptions and the uses and limitations of the mapping documents is available in Fair Work Australia Research Report 2/2012 – Analysing modern award coverage using the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification 2006: Phase 1 report (pdf).

The mapping documents can be downloaded as excel spreadsheets through the links below.

Each document contains the industry description for a class/4 digit code and excerpts from modern awards assessed as having coverage that overlaps with the industry described.

A list of ANZSIC class/4 digit codes is also provided which can be downloaded as an Excel spreadsheet:
